Family Therapy

Family Therapy in McHenry, IL, for Families Running Out of Ideas

One person makes the call. The work involves the whole house. Family counseling in McHenry and online across Illinois, for parents and teens, blended families, and households working through grief or a hard year.

Who Comes In

The Work Happens Between People

Most families call about one person. A teenager who stopped talking, or a kid whose behavior fell apart at school. That person walks in braced to be the problem, and we don’t run sessions that way. The rest of the house adjusts around one person’s struggle, and the work happens between people rather than to one of them.

Who Has to Attend?

Whoever's part of what's going on. Some weeks that's the whole house, other weeks it's two parents and one kid. Your therapist works that out with you.

What If Someone Refuses to Come?

Start without them. Change even part of a household and the rest of it feels the difference. Plenty of holdouts come in later, once they hear what these sessions are like.

Do The Kids Come Every Week?

No. Younger children attend some sessions and skip others. Parents meet with the therapist alone in between.

Who We Work With

Families Arrive in Different Shapes

Eight approaches across three clinicians. Your therapist picks one after meeting you and changes course if it stalls.

Two households, one set of kids

Different rules in each house, and a stepparent still working out where they fit. Jennifer Gosnell holds a master's specialization in marriage, couple, and family counseling, and works with separated and blended households on co-parenting.

When a caseworker is part of the picture

Placement and reunification, or an adoption that changed the shape of the household. Sheri McCue has worked with DCFS-involved families and knows how that system runs alongside therapy.

A year that changed everything

A death in the family, or a diagnosis that changed what the year looked like. Grief lands on a nine-year-old in a different shape than it lands on a parent, and both of them are in the room.

The door that stopped opening

One-word answers, and arguments that start over nothing. We work on the pattern rather than assigning fault for it.

Kids in the Room

A Six-Year-Old Can't Sit Through a Conversation About Boundaries

Younger kids don’t process things by talking about them. Put one in a room full of adults discussing the family’s problems and you’ll get a child who shuts down or one who’s bored in four minutes. So we change the format rather than expecting the child to change.

That means play. Kids show you what’s going on through it long before they can explain it, and your therapist works with whatever comes out in the room. It also means art, which Sheri McCue is certified in, and which reaches what a child can’t put into words. Teenagers respond to it more than you’d expect.

Your therapist sorts ages session by session. A seven-year-old and a fifteen-year-old need different things from the same hour, so some sessions bring the whole family in and others split by age. You’ll know which is which before you show up.

Where We Meet

Getting Everyone There

Getting four people to the same place at the same time is the hard part.

⌖

In our McHenry office

4209 W Shamrock Lane, Suite E. Room for the whole family, and a space for younger kids rather than a row of waiting-room chairs. Easy from Crystal Lake, Woodstock, Cary, and across McHenry County. Get directions.

▣

Online Across Illinois

Useful when a household spreads across two homes. A parent can join from their own place and a college-age kid from a dorm, without anyone driving across the county on a school night.

Insurance & Cost

What a Family Session Costs

Family therapy bills differently from individual sessions, and the difference is worth knowing before you book.

How coverage works

We bill family therapy under one person's diagnosis. Your coverage depends on whose plan you use and what they are being treated for. One session with multiple family members is still billed as one session. We check your specific plan before booking and explain what your insurance covers.

Does family therapy work?

It works when the family shows up and stays with it. Research supports it for behavior problems and family conflict, and for households where one member has a mental health diagnosis. It won’t fix a family where one person does all the work alone.

Most family work runs 10 to 20 sessions. Your therapist tells you where things stand rather than keeping you booked indefinitely.

Both, in a lot of cases. A teenager might see someone one-on-one while the whole family meets on a different day. Bring that question to the first call, since the answer can change after a few sessions.

Depends on age and what your therapist sets up front. Teenagers need some confidentiality for therapy to work at all. Your therapist explains those boundaries to you and your child in the first session, so you’re not guessing later.

Common, and worth saying out loud on the first call. Tell your therapist what went wrong last time, whether it was the fit or who was in the room. That changes how they approach this one.

Yes, in person in McHenry and online across Illinois.
