Gottman Method
Built on decades of research into what predicts whether couples make it. Structured exercises for conflict, repair, and rebuilding connection.
The same argument on repeat. A house that’s gone quiet. Trust that broke and hasn’t been rebuilt. Couples therapy and marriage counseling with licensed therapists who work on the pattern underneath the argument.
Every clinician on this page is licensed in Illinois, and you can verify it before you book. Each one carries specific training in couples work rather than general practice with couples added on. Jennifer Gosnell’s master’s specialization is in marriage, couple, and family counseling.
Couples work here follows a method. Your therapist runs the session, interrupts the pattern when it starts, and gives you something to practice before the next one. If you want a space to talk without direction, we’re not the right fit. If you want someone who’ll tell you what they’re seeing, we are.

For betrayal and trauma that talking hasn't resolved. Useful when one partner keeps reliving the discovery.
Targets the thought patterns feeding the fight, so the same argument stops running on repeat.
Your therapist picks the approach after the first session and adjusts as things change.
Not Every Couple Comes In to Fix a Crisis
Work through money, in-laws, kids, and expectations before they turn into arguments. Most couples do this in a handful of sessions.
For when one of you wants to work on it and the other has a foot out the door. Short-term, five sessions or fewer, aimed at deciding whether to commit to therapy or move toward separation. It's not couples therapy, and it isn't about saving the marriage.
Ending it well matters, especially with kids involved. Jennifer Gosnell is a certified mediator on McHenry County's Family Division roster, so if you're heading that way, the mediation can happen here rather than through two sets of attorneys.
Dating, engaged, partnered, married. The work is the same and so is the care.
The relationship ends, the parenting doesn't. Jennifer Gosnell works with separated and divorced parents on handoffs, house rules, and the arguments that keep happening through the kids. Reunification work too, when a relationship with a child needs rebuilding.
Getting two people in the same room at the same time is half the battle. Online sessions solve most of it.

Both of you on one screen, or each from wherever you are. Same therapist, same session, no commute after work.
A parent watching through the door sees their kid stacking blocks and wonders what they’re paying for. Fair question.
Insurance often doesn't cover couples therapy. Most plans reimburse treatment for a diagnosed mental health condition in one person, and relationship problems on their own usually don't qualify. Sessions get covered when one partner is being treated for something like depression or anxiety and the couples work is part of that treatment.
We check your specific plan before your first session and explain exactly what it will and won't cover. That includes expected copays, deductibles, and whether couples work can be billed as part of treatment. You know the likely cost before starting, with no guessing and no surprise bill later for you.
Start alone. Plenty of people do. One partner working on the relationship changes the dynamic, and a reluctant partner often comes in later once they hear what the sessions are actually like.
Sometimes the answer is yes, and you’d want a therapist honest enough to say so. If you’re not sure whether you’re trying to repair it or end it, discernment counseling is built for that question.
Communication work often lands around eight sessions. Rebuilding after betrayal takes longer. Your therapist tells you where things stand instead of keeping you booked indefinitely.
Sometimes, depending on your plan and your situation. We check before your first session and tell you exactly what’s covered.
Some couples do both. If one of you is working through depression, anxiety, or trauma, individual sessions alongside couples work often move things faster.
Yes, in person in McHenry and online across Illinois.Question one is the only place the reluctant partner gets addressed, since that section was cut. Nobody in this market answers it anywhere.
Tell us what's going on, and we'll tell you which therapist fits, what your insurance covers, and when you could get in. If you're not sure your partner's on board yet, say that too. It's a common place to start.
