Individual Therapy

Individual Therapy in McHenry, IL, for Whatever You've Been Carrying Alone

Anxiety that won’t quiet down. Grief that hasn’t let up. An ADHD diagnosis nobody caught until adulthood. Whatever brought you here, you’ll work through it one-on-one with a licensed therapist who has trained for it.

How It Works

What Happens in Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is you and one therapist, working through what’s going on in your life. The hour is yours. You don’t need to know what’s wrong before you start. Figuring that out is part of the work.

45 To 50
Minutes

Weekly at the start, then less often as things settle.

6 To 8
Sessions

Enough for a specific problem. Depression or trauma you've carried for years takes longer.

A Clear
Endpoint

Your therapist tells you where things stand instead of keeping you booked with no end in sight.

What We Help With

The Reasons People Walk Through Our Door

Eight of the most common reasons people book a first session. Yours might not be on this list, and that’s fine.

01

Anxiety

The worry doesn't stop when the situation does. Racing thoughts, bad sleep, a chest that won't unclench.

02

Depression

Getting out of bed takes everything you have. Things you used to care about feel flat.

03

ADHD

Diagnosed as an adult, or never diagnosed at all. The missed deadlines and the shame that follows them.

04

OCD

Intrusive thoughts you can't argue your way out of, and rituals that buy an hour of quiet at most.

05

Grief

A loss that hasn't loosened its grip, whether it happened last month or nine years ago.

06

Anger

The reaction that's bigger than the moment, and the apology that comes after.

07

Stress and Burnout

You gave up your evenings, then your weekends. Now you're running on empty with no end date.

08

Life Transitions

Divorce, a career change, an empty house, a diagnosis. The ground moved and you're still finding your footing.

Not sure where yours fits? Bring it to the first call.

How We Work

The Methods Behind the Conversation

Every session runs on a method your therapist trained in, chosen for what you’re working through.

Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy (CBT)

Where most of our individual work starts. CBT looks at how your thoughts drive your feelings and your behavior, then works on the patterns keeping you stuck. Structured, practical, and backed by more research than any other talk therapy.

EMDR

For trauma that talking hasn't reached. Guided eye movements help your brain process memories that stayed stuck.

Brainspotting

Finds where trauma sits in your body's stress response and works through it there.

DBT

Skills for emotions that arrive faster than you can manage them.

Clinical hypnosis

A focused state used for pain, stress, and habits that haven't budged.

Internal Family Systems

Treats the anxious part and the protective part as a system worth understanding.

Your First Session

The First Hour, Start to Finish

Most people show up nervous. At least the unknown doesn’t have to be part of it.

You talk, we listen

Your therapist asks what brought you in and what's been going on. You share what you're ready to share, and skip what you're not.

Unsure is fine

You don't need a diagnosis or a rehearsed explanation. Showing up unsure is how most people start.

You leave with a direction

By the end you'll know what your therapist thinks is going on, what approach fits, and what the next few sessions look like.

What's the difference between individual and group therapy?

In individual therapy the hour is yours. Group therapy puts you with others working through something similar, which helps some people and makes others shut down. Most people start with individual sessions.

No. You can book without a diagnosis, a referral, or a clear explanation of what’s wrong. Plenty of people start with nothing more than a sense that something’s off.

Yes. What you say in session stays there. Illinois law sets narrow exceptions, most of them tied to someone’s safety, and your therapist will walk you through them in the first session.

No. Our clinicians are licensed therapists and counselors. Prescribing falls outside their licenses. If medication seems worth exploring, we’ll help you connect with a psychiatrist or your primary care doctor.

Yes. Several of our clinicians work with adolescents. Teen therapy in McHenry

Six to eight for a focused problem. Longer for depression or trauma you’ve carried for years. Your therapist will tell you where things stand rather than leaving it open ended.
